Well, it isn't because the Germans finally realized that there's only so many crossovers you can build. It's because they can't use those names. And Alfa Romeo is the reason they can't.
In the last century, before crossovers were a thing, Alfa built a high-er riding version of the 156 wagon, called the Q4(with its Q2, 2WD twin).
Obviously Alfa isn't using those names, and there's little chances they will ever use them again. But they still own them, and Audi has a problem with it, because Audi's small, coupe-ish crossover is about two years away, and they obviously intend the call that Q2, since it will be sportier than the planned Q1.
Audi approached Fiat, and required those nameplates, it even threw in some cash. But since Marchionne is Fiat's glorious, black sweater wearing, fearless leader, and he is not a huge fan of VAG, his answer was obvious.

You come to me and say "Don Marchionne. give me those nameplates", but you don't ask with respect.
You don't offer friendship or TFSI technology.
You don't even think to call me, Alfa ther...
